Family Violence and the Law
Understand family violence intervention orders and develop practical tips for providing trauma-informed assistance to victim survivors of family violence. Learn to identify the dynamics of family violence and when family violence may matter to the legal assistance you provide, and strategies for sensitive engagement.
You will learn:
- Understand the dynamics of family violence, identify evidence-based risk factors and apply this knowledge to your area of legal practice
- Apply a trauma-informed approach to ask clients about family violence
- Explain the court process and conditions of Family Violence Intervention Orders to your client
- Identify common intersections between family violence law and other areas of law, and why this matters to the legal assistance provided
- Avoid collusion with perpetration of family violence when providing perpetrators with legal assistance
- Apply practical strategies to support clients’ access to help for their family violence legal, safety and recovery needs
- Refer clients to services and collaborate with other practitioners/organisations in Victoria’s family violence response system
