Women’s Legal Service Victoria welcomes new Board Chair

MEDIA RELEASE

Women’s Legal Service Victoria (Women’s Legal) is delighted to announce Laura John has been appointed Board Chair, effective as of it’s 2024 Annual General Meeting, held on Monday 18 November 2024.

Ms John has been a member of the Women’s Legal Board since April 2023. She has worked to defend the rights of migrants and refugees for much of her career, using strategic litigation, policy and public advocacy.

Women’s Legal CEO, Claudia Fatone welcomed the appointment.

“Laura brings a wealth of experience across the community legal sector, including in policy and public advocacy. I am looking forward to working with her as Board Chair as we continue to strengthen and expand our services to support more women and work towards our vision of a gender equitable community, free from violence.”

Speaking about her appointment Ms John said, ”I am humbled to lead the Board of Women’s Legal Service Victoria.”

“Women’s Legal plays a critical role in integrated legal support, law reform and advocacy in Victoria and nationally. As a proud feminist and daughter of Sri Lankan migrants, it is a privilege to be the next Chair.”

“Our outgoing Chair, Jane Welsh, has led the Board with courage, integrity and unparalleled dedication. Women’s Legal has significantly grown under Jane’s watch and the leadership of our CEO, Claudia Fatone. With the support of Board colleagues, I look forward to helping to drive our next phase of impact alongside Claudia, the staff team and our clients.”

Ms John takes over from outgoing Chair Jane Welsh, who has led the Board since 2022.

Reflecting on her time on the Women’s Legal Board, Ms Welsh said “I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with some truly inspiring individuals. I am continually amazed by the commitment and resilience of our team and partners, all working tirelessly to support women and advance justice”

“As we prepare for this transition, I extend my best wishes to our incoming Chair.”

Ms Welsh will remain on the Board for the next 12 months to continue to support Ms John and the Board.

“On behalf of the staff and Board I want to thank Jane for her dedication, governance and leadership. Jane has been a great support to me since I joined Women’s Legal as CEO and it has been a pleasure working together over the past 18 months,” said Claudia Fatone.

The 2024 Annual Impact Report was also released at the Annual General Meeting and can be viewed on our website.
