Family violence and the law

Family Violence and the Law

Family Violence and the Law training builds lawyer understanding of family violence law and provides practical guidance on the provision of trauma-informed assistance to victim-survivors of family violence. Learn to identify when family violence may intersect with the legal assistance you provide, and strategies for effective engagement.

At the end of the training, you will:

  • Understand the dynamics of family violence, identify evidence-based risk factors and apply this knowledge to your area of legal practice.
  • Apply a trauma-informed approach to discussing family violence with clients.
  • Understand the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic) and how to explain the court process and key elements of family violence intervention orders to clients.
  • Identify common intersections between family violence law and other areas of law, and why this matters to the legal assistance you provide.
  • Understand how to avoid collusion with clients using family violence.
  • Apply practical strategies to support clients to access help for their family violence legal issue, safety and recovery needs.
  • Identify relevant services for your clients and collaborate with other practitioners/organisations in Victoria’s family violence response system to provide holistic assistance.
Who is this for?

This training is best suited for generalist community legal assistance lawyers who want to enhance their practice supporting clients with intersecting family violence legal issues.
