02 Apr More family violence support where it’s needed the most
Emerging Lawyers Program open for applications
A number of positions for newly admitted lawyers are now open for application through Women’s Legal Service Victoria’s new Emerging Lawyers Program.
This training and jobs program sets up lawyers for a successful legal career while improving access to family violence and law support across Victoria.
Women’s Legal is working alongside community legal centres across Victoria to deliver more services.
CEO Claudia Fatone says legal support is so important to people’s recovery from family violence.
“We’re working with community legal centres across metropolitan and regional Victoria so that more lawyers can be there when a person’s relationship breaks down or family violence occurs,” she said.
“Everyone deserves to live free from violence, no matter their income or where they live. But right now, too many women experiencing family violence in Victoria are missing out on vital legal support and access to safe, secure housing, both necessary to assist their recovery
“Community legal centres are working together to turn this unjust reality around.
“We can help to secure safe housing, make agreements to safely look after children, split up assets or bank accounts, organise a new visa, and make sure the bills are paid fairly.”
The successful Emerging Lawyers will train together as a group across the 18-month program.
Regional placements are spread across:
- Shepparton, with Goulburn Valley Community Legal Centre
- Bendigo, with Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre
- Warrnambool, with Emma House Legal Program
- Ballarat, with Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service
- Mildura, with the Mallee Family Care Community Legal Centre
- Morwell, at Gippsland Community Legal Service
- Albury Wodonga, at Hume Riverina Community Legal Service.
Some of the lawyers will also work across Melbourne and its surrounds, including at:
- Djirra in Melton
- InTouch Multicultural Centre against Family Violence in East Melbourne
- Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre in St Albans
- South-East Monash Legal Service in Springvale
- Northern Community Legal Centre in Broadmeadows
- Eastern Community Legal Centre in Box Hill and Boronia
- YouthLaw in Carlton.
“We’re working so that communities and people who are most in need can get what they need to stay safe, secure housing and support to move on from family violence,” Claudia said.
