Child protection and the law
Get an overview of the child protection system, with a focus on trauma‑informed client engagement and appropriate referrals.
At the end of the training, you will:
- Gain a broad understanding of the child protection system, and the different ways child protection may become involved in your client’s life.
- Learn about voluntary agreements, child protection orders, and the role of the Children’s Court.
- Understand key sections of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 (Vic) including ‘best interests’ principles.
- Identify, and respond to, common intersections between child protection orders and other areas of law.
- Apply trauma-informed skills to better support clients, particularly those with diverse and intersecting needs.
- Identify legal and non-legal referral pathways to provide holistic care for your clients.

Generalist community legal sector lawyers who want to enhance their practice supporting clients with intersecting child protection legal issues.
