Our story

Championing safety, justice and dignity for 40+ years

Since 1982, Women’s Legal has stood beside women as they reclaim safety, control and agency after experiencing violence.

Our story began with a group of lawyers and activists who came together to challenge a legal system that deliberately excluded women, limiting their access to protection and justice.

From those grassroots beginnings, we’ve grown from a volunteer-run helpline to Victoria’s statewide specialist legal service for women and non-binary people experiencing family and sexual violence.

We recently celebrated 40+ years of service

In this video, staff, supporters and founding members reflect on our early days and how that work continues to shape the future of our service.

What makes us different is how we work

We do more than provide free legal help. Our lawyers work alongside social workers and financial counsellors to support safety, recovery and wellbeing.

We listen first, respect each person’s choices, and walk alongside them as they move forward.

We know systems don’t always keep people safe. We bring our experience to improving laws, courts and services, so responses are faster, fairer and grounded in dignity.

We share knowledge with the workforce and advocate for change, working towards a future where all women and non-binary people can live free from violence and discrimination.
